Hello, my Freaky Darlings!
The Saloon Killer
Today’s serial killer is The Saloon Killer aka Velaphi Ndlaga-Mandla.
Velaphi killed 19 people over a period of five months in and around the town of Piet Retief, Mpumalanga. He was charged with quite a list of crimes including, 19 murder charges, nine of attempted murder, six robbery charges, one attempted robbery charge, five housebreaking charges (three of housebreaking with intent to steal and theft and two of housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery), indecent assault, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and pointing a firearm. He was sentenced to 137 years in prison.
Apparently, he wanted to be a soldier but the closest he could get was a job as a security guard. He buried the gun he used in the murders, a .22 rifle, next to his house so he could keep it close to him and out of sight of prying eyes.
I have to admit in terms of some of the South African serial killers this one was actually pretty boring.
