Hello, my Freaky Darlings!
Greetings from a toasty warm arse-end of Africa.
Mother Nature has decided to fast-track us from winter straight into the fiery depths of summer. Today, we’re sizzling at a scorching 31 degrees Celsius – just a gentle reminder that sunscreen is your new BFF.
But speaking of things turning up the heat, Johannesburg’s CBD has been quite the hot spot this week, and no, I’m not talking about trendy new brunch places. In a week filled with relentless flames, Johannesburg’s CBD became a sombre focal point of tragedy, capturing the attention of the New York Times and the BBC. Amidst the scorching heat, a five-storey hijacked building in Marshalltown turned into a heart-wrenching inferno on Thursday, claiming the lives of at least 73 souls. As the city swelters, let’s pause to remember those who found themselves engulfed in a sorrowful and unforgiving blaze.
While we navigate the sad realities of our world, sometimes, a thrilling escape is in order. Speaking of which, here’s a reminder that my gripping serial killer thriller, ‘Requiem in E Sharp,’ is available until the 4th of September at the reduced price of just $2.99 on Kobo as part of their Labor Day Sale.
And the discount works across all countries, not just in the US …
And here’s a short extract from it:
The door to the operations room was made of thin, pressed wood. It was the kind of door that if given a good solid kick, it would splinter and the offending foot would go right through it. Nico opened the door, and Louis pushed past him. The room was deserted. Only the victims’ ghosts were here. Nico watched Louis’s facial expressions change from curiosity to shock, then to what should have been horror but looked more like discomfort as he moved closer to the pictures. He couldn’t help but wonder what Louis thought as he examined each of the victims. There was something in the way his eyes seemed to devour the images. It wasn’t the reaction he’d expected. But everybody reacted differently to the grisly images on display.
The pictures reminded Nico of his failure that morning. He would be adding another set of photos to the grotesque collage when another body was discovered. He turned around and walked out of the room, leaving Louis to stare at the dead women. He, on the other hand, couldn’t face them. He leaned against the wall and waited for Louis to finish his morbid viewing.
