I’m considering doing t-shirts and mugs for promotional usage, like give aways on my up coming blog book tour in May.

I think either image would make drinking coffee an adventure in intensity. How about just doing the name of your book, or a quote from it, using the same typeface?

If I had to choose, I’d go with the white on black for a t-shirt. For a mug, I’d choose neither. I’m with Kris, I’d go with name of book & possibly a quote. If you put the face on a t-shirt, I’d still put book title on it, too.

The second, I think. The subject matter is dark, so the second gives a mostly dark background.

Depends on what feel you’re going for. The first one feels dark/creepier to me than the second. I’m not sure I’d be willing to reach for that cup first thing in the morning. The second is also dark, but somehow I think I pick it up to investigate those eyes a bit further. I wouldn’t drink morning coffee from it, though.
I would include the book title on all promotional items – your name as well, if it fits.
