  1. Great video, Joan. I agree about competition. The more better books there are, the more people will be excited about reading. I hadn’t heard that statistic about needing 20 books to make a living. Very interesting.

    That stat about 20 books has been bandied about for a while, but I also think it’s a case of the more books you have the more chance you have at making a living.
    But I also think it doesn’t matter how many books you have out there if nobody knows you have them out.

  3. I heard a similar piece of advice which was, ‘The best thing you can do to promote your book is write another one’. The more books you have, the more visible you are, but as you said: it doesn’t make a difference if no one knows they’re out there at all. The perils of self-publishing…

  4. But one of the things with self-publishing is that I have a lot more marketing opportunities open to me than most traditionally published authors, especially authors who have been published by a small press.
    And even authors who have been published by one of the bigger publishers are now having to do most of their own marketing.
    As I said, we’re all in the same boat whether traditionally published or indie.
