Hello my Freaky Darlings,

I’m friends with quite a few other writers on Facebook and Twitter. My friendships range from wanna be writers, to more established writers, and best-sellers, but the majority of them are, like me, struggling to find a footing in the publishing industry. They also seem to be far more prolific. I often notice that some authors post status updates about their large word count reached for that day, and every time they do I want to throw my laptop out the window or take a sledge hammer to it. The reason being is that I’m lucky if, at the end of the day, I have four or five hundred words that I’m happy with and actually keep. The worst part is that it takes me a few hours to have those 500 words. Granted, it’s probably my own fault. I do have a tendency of deleting more of my writing as I go than I actually end up keeping. I’ll probably end up deleting a paragraph, re-writing it, and then deleting it again only to rewrite it again. I won’t even get into how many times I’ll delete a particular sentence until I’m happy with it. At least at the end of the day, when I shut down my laptop, I know that the words I have left on that page are words I’m probably going to keep and I’m not going to have to delete pages and pages of writing when the editing starts. I sometimes wonder, when I see these massive word count amounts, how many of those words are actually going to be kept at the end of the day? Or are all three thousand of those words they wrote that day perfect? Am I just a lazy writer? Which is entirely possible.
