The word I suggest is yarling it means to howl or wail…Eliza Keating
feodora@fsmail.net
Y: Yellow-bellied
jessica.mchugh@ymail.com
Y is difficult! Hmmm, let’s see… yuck (?) Oh, I’m definitely not a winner! Lame attempt 🙂
Joan, Happy Halloween and happy Coffin Hop!

Yeti 🙂

My first thoughts are all onomonopia but I’ll go with “yowl” since “howl” isn’t your H word. I’m enjoying the coffin hop so far

Yeti! a mean blood thirsty one of course
I’ll have to go with Yanni — the musician, of course.
What about “Yack-o-lantern”? That has two definitions. It can either be a Jack-o-lantern that has had too much to drink or a Russian trying to say “Jack-o-lantern”
Oooh what about a Yeti for Y?
Of course after I comment the page wants to show everyone’s comments making me look like I don’t read or pay attention. Uhg! Great posting.
What a fun list! Impossible to come up with an interesting y-word. You have me thinking 🙂
This is creative! I like it. Let’s see…how about Yog-Sothoth, the giant and terrible elder god of Lovecraftian mythology?
I would have to go with yodeler (preferably a zombified one)
Hi there, #42 Rebecca dropping in. I’ll go with my own WIP’s “monster” — Yaoguai – loosely translated = Chinese Demon
I have one a vampiric Yoda:)
Heather
Yellow-polka-dot bikini
better yet…yellow polka-dot biniki on a 50-foot woman
You don’t have a crone on your list? Here we go:
Singular:
Yaga, Baba
Plural:
Yaga, Babas-
Collective:
A solace of Babas-Yaga (from http://wondermark.com/566/)
Earliest recorded reference is to “yaga-baba”, which also works (from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baba_Yaga)
Claws are scarier than a little old lady.
Yelp!
Hi Joan, very comprehensive list, I enjoyed reading it very much. My Y is “Yeter’el” which is the name of a Jewish/Christian fallen angel, or demon if you prefer.
I pick Yurei
Definition from Asian Horror Encyclopedia: Ghost usually a vengeful spirit or one with unfinished business on earth. Originally, yurei were indistinguishable in appearance from the living person, usually dressed in white funeral attire, a plain white kimono or one inscribed with Buddhist sutras.

I’m coffin hopping today along with others. I write dark fiction. Creep on by to The Demon Stole My Pencil when you get a chance. I have an interview up with Ellen Datlow this week.
Happy lurking zombies,

How about “yellow-eyed”
giuseppedog(at)comcast(dot)net
How about Yoko Ono? She’s pretty scary ….
Yeah, okay, I got nothin’. *laughs* I’m going to take solace in the fact that you said “most original” and not “best.” 🙂

Yama – in ancient Hindu lore, the first man to die. He descended to the underworld, but returns to act as a psychopomp, leading souls to their rest. He is sometimes depicted as a demonic figure who carries a noose in one hand.
I’m going to say Yorga, as in Count Yorga, Vampire
